about
It’s safe to say that ‘Just Like In a Movie’ spawned Star Circus rather than the other way round. It was a song I wrote a few years ago which I thought would be perfect for my band at the time, Bordello Rose. But for whatever reason it didn’t work out, and the band itself fizzled not long after anyway. Anyway a couple of good friends of mine really liked it and suggested that if they don’t want it, I should make my own album and stick it on there, and that’s really how the idea of Star Circus started.
If you’ve ever watched a really inspiring film and thought ‘I’m gonna wake up tomorrow and life’s gonna be totally different. I’m gonna appreciate every moment, take some huge chances, reach for the stars, love every person I meet…’. Then you actually wake up and life goes back to normal and do none of that, you can probably relate to this song. There’s a positive sentiment that with a bit of a kick we can live like our heroes, but it’s grounded in very British sarcasm and apathy ‘On this fairground ride, where nothing changes and everybody’s fine/ Another day stuck inside, inside your movie…'
lyrics
Cindy works at Marks & Sparks
She just turned Thirty-Four
Still waiting for her handsome prince
To burst straight through the door
But it’s okay, she loves the world today
‘Cause she just watched ’The Holiday’
For the hundredth time
And everything will be alright
(Just like in a movie)
He’ll walk in and say that line
(Just like in a movie)
But it’s a scripted lie
Nothing changes and everybody’d fine
Another day stuck inside
Inside your movie
Barbie smoked a bag today
She’s staring at her phone
Another glass of Chardonnay
She’ll spend tonight alone
But it’s okay and who the hell’s to say
She won’t save the world one day
Another time
Same old scene every night
(Just like in a movie)
He’ll walk in and hold you tight
(Just like in a movie)
‘Cause we’re just waisting time
Hoping that a twist will change our minds
Another day stuck inside
Inside your movie
Cinderella puts her slippers on
She thinks her pumpkin’s burst and all the magic’s gone
Barberella pins it all on fate
If you had a different name
And if you had a different face
Would everything just change
Or would you still be to blame… for your mistakes
Everything will be alright
(Just like in a movie)
He’ll walk in and save your life
(Just like in a movie)
On this fairground ride
Where nothing changes and everybody’d fine
Don’t you think that it’s time
You made your f**kin’ movie!

"A sound that is stacked full of infectious melodies, grandiose vocal and instrumental harmonies plus colossally catchy choruses. It is this musical melting pot that makes Star Circus so fascinating." - Sophie James (Metaltalk.net) ...more
